“The mission of The Gurmat school Southington CT is to give students the knowledge and appreciation of the Sikh way of life and their rich Sikh heritage.”

Goals of The Gurmat School

The goal of the The Gurmat school Southington CT  is to teach the children Sikh way of life and message of the Sikh gurus.  
 
We will accomplish these goals by teaching children a set curriculum in three domains:
1. Punjabi Curriculum is established to privide knowledge of Punjabi and Gurmukhi   
    script.
2. Gurmat Curriculum is established to provide knowledge of Sikh history and Gurbani
3. Sikh way of life is demonstrated through Gurmat camps, and sewa activities.
4. Kirtan program is an additional program for those chidren who have interest in learning Kirtan so they can appreciate and nurture the kirtan tradition.

The outcomes of the Khalsa School education: We would like our students to grow up into adulthood feeling proud of their Sikh heritage; be comfortable with the Sikh identity anywhere they go; practice Sikh way of life and raise Gursikh families

Curriculum Objectives

Each domain above has objectives that must be achieved by the Gurmat School students:

1.   The main objective of Punjabi Curriculum is to enables the students to read the Sikh scriptures, in particular Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.  
o    A secondary objective is to develop Punjabi literacy skills and bring awareness of the rich cultural heritage in the youth and instill pride in their Sikh identity.
2.   The main objective of the Gurmat program is to impart knowledge of the Sikh values through teaching of the Sikh history and Gurbani.
3.  The main objective of Kirtan program is to preserve the Sikh Kirtan tradition and instill appreciation of this aspect of Sikhi in the younger generation.

Keeping these goals in mind,  the Gurmat school Southington CT  curriculum has been based on San Jose Khalsa School Curriculum, provided by Pushpinder Kaur
 that includes instruction in the fields of reading, writing and speaking Punjabi, memorization of Gurbani, and instruction in other important aspects of Sikh history.

Grade Level 1

Duration: 1 Year

Punjabi Curriculum

o    The Gurmukhi Alphabet
o    Simple two-three letter words
o    Names of the rainbow colors in Punjab
o    Do counting up to 10 in Punjabi

Gurmat Curriculum

o    Memorize with some understanding Japji Sahib Gurbani up till Pauri 5
o    Information about Sikh Guru Sahibaan
o    Information about Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji
o    Information about Chaar Sahibzad
o    Information about Panj Piaarey
o    Some Shabads

History Curriculum

o    Sakhis of Guru Nanak Dev Ji

Grade Level 2

Duration: 1 Year

Punjabi Curriculum

Mastery of the Gurmukhi Matras

o    Simple two-three letter words
o    Lagaan Matra symbols and their sounds
o    Special sound modifiers in Punjabi
o    Names of the days of the week, months, and seasons
o    Do counting up to 25 in Punjab

Gurmat Curriculum

o    Memorize with some understanding Japji Sahib Gurbani up till Pauri 11
o    Information about Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji
o    Information about Gur Purabs
o    Information about 5 K’s
o    Information about Panj Piaray
o    Information about Chaar Sahibzaday
o    Some Shabad

History Curriculum

o    Sakhis of Guru Angad Dev Ji
o    Sakhis of Guru Amar Das Ji
o    Sakhis of Guru Ram Das Ji

Grade Level 3

Duration: 1 Year

Punjabi Curriculum

Beginning Reading (Words, simple sentences, poems and short stories)
o    Read simple text in Punjabi
o    Write a simple essay about themselves
o    Develop a good base in vocabulary
o    Do counting up to 50 in Punjabi

Gurmat Curriculum

o    Memorize with some understanding Japji Sahib Gurbani up till Pauri 19
o    Anand Sahib 6 Pauris
o    Information about Chaar Sahibzaday
o    Information about Panj Takhat
o    Information about Akhand Paath

History Curriculum

o    Sakhis of Guru Arjan Dev Ji

Grade Level 4

Duration: 1 Year

Punjabi Curriculum

Intermediate Reading (Simple short stories)

o    Read short stories, Sakhis, essays, and poems with relative ease, understand the text and be able to answer questions from the text
o    Do counting up to 100 in Punjabi
o    Develop understanding of the basic concepts of Punjabi grammar.

Gurmat Curriculum

o    Memorize with some understanding Japuji Sahib Gurbani up till Pauri 26
o    Anand Sahib Gurbani 6 Pauris
o    Information about Akhand Path

History Curriculum

o    Sakhis of Guru Har Gobind Ji
o    Sakhis of Guru Har Rai Ji
o    Sakhis of Guru Har Krishan Ji

Grade Level 5

Duration: 1 Year

Punjabi Curriculum

Advanced Reading Level 1 (Sakhies of Guru Nanak Dev Ji)
o    Read Punjabi fluently at 60 words per minute speed and understand what they read
o    Write answers to question in complete sentences
o    Learn counting up to 1000 and beyond in Punjabi
Gurmat Curriculum
o    Memorize with some understanding complete Japji Sahib Gurbani
History Curriculum
o    Sakhis of Guru Teg Bahadur Ji

Grade Level 6

Duration: 1 Year

Punjabi Curriculum

The students at this level are supposed to have learned everything from the previous levels. Any material they have not learned must be assigned and learned by the student. At this level, they will:
o    Write an essay about themselves
o    Take dictation in Punjabi with 80% accuracy
o    Read short stories, Sakhies, essays, and poems fluently with 70 words per minute speed, understand the text and be able to answer comprehension questions from the text orally and in writin
